چکیده

The family of deterministic input-driven pushdown automata (IDPDA; a.k.a. visibly pushdown automata, a.k.a. nested word automata) is known to be closed under reversal, concatenation and Kleene star. As shown by Alur and Madhusudan (“Visibly pushdown languages”, STOC 2004), the reversal and the Kleene star of an n-state IDPDA can be represented by an IDPDA with 2 2) states, while concatenation of an m-state and an n-state IDPDA is represented by an IDPDA with 2 2) states. This paper presents more efficient constructions for the reversal and for the Kleene star, which yield 2 logn) states, as well as an m2 log -state construction for the concatenation. These constructions are optimal due to the previously known matching lower bounds.

Input-Driven Stack Automata

We introduce and investigate input-driven stack automata, which are a generalization of input-driven pushdown automata that recently became popular under the name visibly pushdown automata. Basically, the idea is that the input letters uniquely determine the operations on the pushdown store. This can nicely be generalized to stack automata by further types of input letters which are responsible...

Complexity of Input-Driven Pushdown Automata1

In an input-driven pushdown automaton (IDPDA), the current input symbol determines whether the automaton performs a push operation, a pop operation, or does not touch the stack. Inputdriven pushdown automata, also known under alternative names of visibly pushdown automata and of nested word automata, have been intensively studied because of their desirable features: for instance, the model allo...

Input-Driven Double-Head Pushdown Automata

We introduce and study input-driven deterministic and nondeterministic double-head pushdown automata. A double-head pushdown automaton is a slight generalization of an ordinary pushdown automaton working with two input heads that move in opposite directions on the common input tape. In every step one head is moved and the automaton decides on acceptance if the heads meet. Demanding the automato...

2-Visibly Pushdown Automata

Visibly Pushdown Automata (VPA) are a special case of pushdown machines where the stack operations are driven by the input. In this paper, we consider VPA with two stacks, namely 2-VPA. These automata introduce a useful model to effectively describe concurrent pushdown systems using a simple communication mechanism between stacks. We show that 2-VPA are strictly more expressive than VPA. Indeed...

Height-Deterministic Pushdown Automata

We define the notion of height-deterministic pushdown automata, a model where for any given input string the stack heights during any (nondeterministic) computation on the input are a priori fixed. Different subclasses of height-deterministic pushdown automata, strictly containing the class of regular languages and still closed under boolean language operations, are considered. Several such lan...
